CAREGIVING TIPS

It is extremely important to properly care for a loved one who is challenged by daily activities. In order to do so there are steps that can be taken in order to insure that proper care is given.

Bellow are tips that can assist you with insuring your loved one is receiving optimal care.

BATHING

In the case where a patient is unable to bathe themselves, giving them a sponge bath is the ideal option. The most important areas to cleans daily are the genitals, rectal area, armpits and the face. It is not necessary to use a substantial amount of soap or water when cleaning these areas. A gentle cleans of each area will make a significant difference in maintaining proper hygiene and comfort of the patient.

BED SORES

Here are a few ways to prevent bed sores:

  • Maintain a dry and clean bed. If sheets are wet they should be changed immediately.
  • Make sure the patient is not in the same position for an extended period of time.
  • If the patient sleeps on a standard mattress, have them change to a pressure redistribution mattress. This type of mattress is meant for helping prevent bed sores.

BLADDER CARE

In the case where a patient cannot control their bladder, it is important to help them to the restroom regularly. Setting up timers in regular intervals is a great way to control this. The alternative to setting timers is implementing a catheter. With a catheter, as the bag fills up it can regularly be drained.

CONSTIPATION

Here are a few ways to prevent constipation:

  • Have the patient maintain a high fiber diet.
  • Make sure the patient is drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Drinking certain teas can relax the bowels.
  • In some cases a laxative or stool softener can be administered.

DIARRHEA

Here are some ways of preventing diarrhea:

  • Have the patient avoid fibrous foods and instead eat more carbohydrate rich foods.
  • Avoid giving the patient spicy foods.
  • Assure that the patient is well hydrated.
  • In certain cases, medication can be prescribed which can help.

FATIGUE

Here are a few steps to help prevent fatigue:

  • Movement. Make sure the patient is active in some way whether it is by taking regular walks or doing a variety of exercises.
  • Make sure that the patient is properly hydrated.
  • Provide a peaceful, soothing and relaxing environment for the patient.
  • Ensure that the patient is getting a proper amount of sleep.
  • Encourage patients to have regularly scheduled activities.
